Get Your Art Noticed
  • Put your art in a location that won't be quickly cleaned by rushed employees. I know that sinking feeling when I've watched an overworked restaurant worker clear a table and throw everything into the trash, including my Found Art. If you are at a sit-down restaurant, you could leave your art in a menu for the next customer. Or you could put it with the receipt when you pay your bill. Instead of leaving artwork on a table of pamphlets, leave your art tacked to a bulletin board. Instead of putting art on a table with magazines, put your art IN a magazine as a bookmark.
  • Put your art in places that will stand out! If the weather is nice, hang your art from a tree with branches that fall over a sidewalk. This is a nice surprise for those who take a stroll. And it's a fun way to decorate bare, winter trees. If your art isn't weather proof, you can do a similar thing in shopping malls since they often use plants and trees as decoration.
  • Include a "calling card." Vista Print offers free business cards. Create one with your Blogger web address on it so that whoever finds your art can find you easily. There are several lines to fill and since you won't want to give your address or phone number, fill the lines with an inspirational message.
  • Leave some art where it will be a welcome surprise. Leave chunky (non paper) art along walking paths or on benches in parks. Leave cheerful artwork in hospitals or doctors' offices. Again, make sure your artwork doesn't get tossed when cleaning up pamphlet racks or magazines. Leave your art out on a open table, on the check-in counter, or hanging from a hook on the coat rack. Make it conspicious.
  • Get some attention in your town. Get together with friends and plan a Found Art Frenzy. Spend a few hours together making uplifting art, then unleash it on your community. Choose a location where people will be very receptive and grateful for your gesture. For example, make arrangements ahead of time to bring your art to a children's hospital or nursing home. The event could become a type of indoor scavenger hunt for the residents. Or leave your art around a college campus near the holidays as a special gift for those students who can't afford to go home. Or ask permission to leave your art in a library in a poorer area of town. Some Found Artists have found libraries very receptive to the idea of having a Found Art bookmark box on the counter for library patrons to take. Leave your art along the path of a Gallery Walk. Those interested in art will be more likely to find it.
  • Put yourself in the spotlight. If you plan an event with friends or simply plan to splatter an area of town with Found Art, let your local newspaper know about it ahead of time. News media are often in need of a fun, good-news, stories. If the residents of your town know about your art leavings ahead of time, they are more likely to look for them, and more likely to know what they are when they find them. We love to know when Found Artists are recognized. If an article is printed about your Found Art activities, please let us know. We'd love to receive a copy, either by e-mail or snail mail, if possible.
